Here we have !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the Wasp-class Bataan being pushed into a dock at the mouth of the bay by 3 Navy tugs (which are hard to see ... I should use a better camera than my iPhone's for these). Named for the heroic defenders of Bataan during WWII and the subsequent !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! forced on those defenders when they surrendered to the Japanese, the Bataan is a sister ship to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
Question for former/current Squids who served/spent time at/otherwise are familiar with North Island:
I've pointed out where Bataan currently is on the map above. If I had to guess, this is some kind of supply point ... maybe mission modules are loaded here? So far I've only noticed ships designed to use these tend to dock here and they are typically there for less than a day and never overnight. Anyone?

Yes, exactly. That is Shelter Island, home of the San Diego Yacht Club ... the guys who won the America's Cup back after years and years of foreign possession :)

I was going to make mention of the USS Wainwright as a side note, but - blowing my mind - DLG-28 (a Belknap destroyer) was named after the same namesakes +1 as two previous USS Wainwrights, and not (oddly) Jonathan M. Wainwright .

That dock by the mouth of the port you're pointing at is for weapons loading/offloading.
If you look on maps to the southeast of that dock you can see the ordnance dugouts all nicely spaced out to avoid a chain-reaction detonations.
If I remember correctly that's mostly guided ordnance (missiles) that's stored there. RAM's for ships and air-to-air missiles for the aircraft on North Island.

Cool, my guess was sort of right ... Thanks for the clarification!

I read the title as "USS Batman" at first.

Not true they picked up their weapons last November in New Jersey and are not resupplied with weapons at a port like this. Even if there was a need to resupply now weapons handling is usually done far from things we don't want to blow up like the air field next to the dock. This was a quick stop for gas and veggies and most of the guys didn't leave the ship.
